Pre-War Mercedes Breaks Record In Online Auction

A 1927 Mercedes-Benz 680 S Sport/4 is now the priciest car to sell via an online auction.

The record for the most expensive car sold through an online auction was just smashed, after the previous record being set only a few months ago. Breaking the previous record of $2 million, a rare pre-war 1927 Mercedes-Benz 680 S Sport/4 has set a new high price of $2.8 million. One of just 146 made, this classic is more than just a looker, it carries quite the history background with it.

This Mercedes-Benz is based on the Model K chassis, and the body was designed by Ferdinand Porsche himself. The red bodied over tan leather interior classic is powered by a supercharged 6.8-liter inline six cylinder engine that feeds into a four-speed manual transmission.

It was initially sold in 1928 in Germany, and it was imported into Argentina, and eventually made its way into the United States. A museum refurbished the car in the 1972, and it was further restored in the 1980s to the state its in today.

This is the third time this year a new record has been set during an online auction. Will the record last long?
