Model BB Flatbed Truck

Description

1933 Ford Model BB Flatbed Truck

For consignment, a barn find 1935 Ford Model BB flatbed with a full custom treatment from the firewall back.  A custom wood cab, long wheelbase, a typical shield style grille, and a 221ci flathead V8, and suspension that raised the truck to be able to easily load cargo from a loading dock.  She will need plenty of TLC however all is there and awaiting your loving hand.

Exterior
Time has taken some toll on the metal exterior with plenty of dents and dings on virtually every surface.  Some rust is noted but I would call it slight overall.  It's all factory Ford from the firewall forward with louvered hood cowling, Ford V8 badges and pod style headlights flanking the chrome trimmed sloping shield grille.  A surface rusted bumper hangs down below and wraps around to the gracefully curved fenders that present with dents, rust and cracking of the metal.  These flow rearward to meet up with a long stamped steel running board on the passenger's side and a replacement wooden unit on the driver's side.  A simple squared off cabin, constructed from wood, provides the passengers minimal protection from the elements with only a simple flat roof and vertical windshield.  No doors, and no cab rear are noted, just dark green painted wood.  A shallow wooden bed resides aft of the cab and presents with cracked and warped sides and on the passengers side we note a wide fender to cover dual rear wheels, which only have singles installed.  The bed flooring is made of more wood slats and a few boards have rotted to the point of being structurally unsound.

Interior
The original dash sports original gauges and steering wheel.  A green vinyl bench seat floats atop the stamped steel and wood flooring, covered in dark green vinyl that is both dirty and has some tearing.  Peering upward we are met with a green painted wooden roof.  Utilitarian would be the buzz word for the interior.

Drivetrain
Equipped with the larger engine available at the time, we see a fairly clean and nice looking 221ci flathead V8. There is a single 2-barrel carb on top, and a split range 3-speed manual transmission on back.  This combination turns the 4.88 geared rear axle.

Undercarriage
Our lift was not able to accommodate this truck but we did our best to peek underneath and we saw a good solid structural frame, body hangers that have surface rust, and some more rotting of the flatbed wood.  Mechanical drum brakes are all around mounted to the transverse leaf spring front suspension and traditional leaf spring rear arrangement.

Drive-Ability
Unfortunately, we dared not start this engine as the fuel in the see-through bowl has turned a shade of red, and we would assume doing so would lead to disaster for the carburetor.  A film of surface rust and patina cover nearly every surface under the side lifting hood, but things appear complete when viewing the hoses, wiring and ignition system.

Flatbed trucks were not the craze in 1935 and we do not have exact numbers, but most were of the “stake body” design with rear fenders in metal and single rear wheels.  And at the time in the history of this truck it very well could have been a “stake body”, but it remains unknown.  We do know now it's a flatbed, the ability to install dual rear wheels, and a 221ci flathead V8 with a chrome trimmed grille.  A project for the blue oval truck aficionado.
