1957 Buick

Special

Description

This 1957 Buick Special is a charming 50s cruiser that would make a great entry-level classic car. To much surprise, Buick seemed to take a step back in terms of its sale in 1957. In fact, the GM marque saw a nearly 25% decline in sales and dropped to 4th place among America's automakers, replaced by Plymouth. The reason for Buick's decline in 1957 is a bit of a mystery and it certainly wasn't for Buick's lack of effort. When the 1957 Buicks debuted, there were absolutely gorgeous and sported completely redesigned bodies that were lower and wider which gave them a much more modern look. Up front, the grilles and front bumpers sported a completely new look, with the grilles featuring a thin vertical bar design capped off with a Buick emblem. Down the sides, a red-filled chrome sweepspear ran nearly the entire length of the car and, like virtually all post-war Buicks, the front fenders were trimmed with the iconic Buick ventiports. At the tail, the taillights were completely redesigned with prominent chrome trim as was the rear bumper which housed the partially hidden fuel filler door. The interiors were also considerably updated by Buick in 1957. The instrument cluster was completely enclosed into a modern-looking single unit that was mounted between a pair of large circles that housed the lights and wiper knobs. The rest of the dash had an entirely new profile that looked almost space-age. In addition to Buick's brand-new style in 1957, both inside and out, Buick also rolled out a brand-new engine across its entire passenger car lineup, the 364 "Nailhead", an architecture that would be used by Buick for nearly the decade that followed. In total, Buick produced 23,180 Special 2 door Sedans which explains why you don't see many of them at the local car shows or cruising down the road. Under the hood on this Buick Special is a Numbers Matching 364 Cubic Inch "Nailhead" V8 fed by a single 2 barrel carburetor that together were said to have created 250 horsepower when new. The 364 Nailhead V8 is backed by a Dynaflow Automatic transmission which was a $220 option back in 1957 and makes this 50s Buick an easy car for just about anybody to drive. A driver's side chrome outside mirror is a welcome addition to this '57 Buick Special since it makes squeezing in and out of a tight parking space much easier. Riding on a set of wide whitewall bias-ply tires mounted on red painted steel rims and accented with full Buick wheelcovers, this Series 40 Special has a fantastic look while parked or while cruising down the road. The exterior of this 1957 Special has been refinished in a gorgeous two-tone paint scheme consisting of a Kearney Green over Mint Green, with red accents, completing the exterior look of the car. The interior on this 1957 Buick Special 2 door sedan is charming! The front and rear bench seats are correctly upholstered in two-tone green vinyl with cloth inserts. The green carpeting, door panels, painted dash, and steering wheel have a fantastic stock look and appear to retain a nice stock look. The instrument cluster is outfitted with a a 120 MPH ribbon-style speedometer, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, amp gauge, and gasoline gauge. The dash is completed with the heater/defroster and lighting controls, along with a locking glove box. Whether you're buying your very first classic car or you're adding to an exisiting collection, this 1957 Buick Special would make an excellent choice. Give Ellingson's a call today at 763-428-7337!
