As we say all the time here at the Classic Auto Mall, “you never know what is going to come through the door next”, and this consignment would be the textbook example. Here we have the beginnings of an amusement park lot shuttle which is based on a 1948 Studebaker Chassis. Complete with cow catcher, smokestack, large headlight, rounded engine cowl, and room for plenty of passengers in the engine and “passenger coal car”. We have a barn find condition novelty item like none other. You better hurry because as soon as I find a ferris wheel, I'm working on the beginnings of a rival to Hershey Park, and this consignment will be my signature shuttler!

Exterior
Fabricated metal painted black is riveted to a frame that comes very close to simply replicating a true steam engine of yore, only this one is powered by a Chevrolet inline 6-cylinder engine. A working bell, faux steam release valve, and engineer hold on bars to climb on this engine if a repair should be needed all the while shuttling to and from the park or parking lot. A custom cab has also been fabricated and it has a central windshield and dual arched side windows so you can look at the track ahead for any potential hazards. A dual air horn is atop this engine and has windshield wipers and a curved arched barrel roof. A passenger trailer is on back but is actually part of the original frame and indeed is not independent of the engine, but one full long body. Condition is showing some surface rust, paint chipping, invasive rust, and hastily repaired panels here and there used to remove assumed rust problems that once existed. A metal framework is throughout and can be used to have a fabricated canvas covering to protect from all the elements that may come down the tracks at you. Large chromed bolt on truck wheels are wrapped with bias ply tires. Down by the station early in the mornin'

Interior
For the engineers cockpit we note dual bomber style buckets on a wood planked floor, and some passenger wood bench seating in the same compartment. A full instrument dash is in front, and an original bakelite steering wheel is fronting this dash. In the back, more wood flip top storage seating is seen, as well as a spare tire on the wood planked floor. I'm goin' off the rails in a crazy train!

Drivetrain
Under the rounded cowled hood is a Chevrolet inline 6-cylinder engine currently not crank or running that holds a 3-speed manual transmission on the rear of it. Overall a nice aged patina covers the surfaces of this mill, and it does not have an air cleaner attached. We note that there were no keys at the time of this writing and the clutch pedal did not release the clutch. People all over the world, join hands, start a love train! Love train!

Undercarriage
A coating of surface rust and weathered wood makes up the undercarriage. Big leaf springs for the back with drum brakes and in front more drums. All is solid underneath with just a few areas of invasive rust creeping in.

Certainly a novelty item which has a use somewhere for someone who has a hankering for riding the rails, this 1948 Studebaker chassis, custom fabricated shuttle is highly unusual, and with just a bit of TLC can be back on track. Unfortunately due to it not currently running, nor stopping, I cannot state it handles like it's on rails..Bah…dum… dum!
