As Chevrolet started to close the gap in the sales race with Ford during the mid 1920's, GM's Alfred P. Sloan decided that Chevrolet needed a new 6 cylinder engine. He tasked engineers Ormont E. Hunt and Henry M. Crane with designing and building the new powerplant. Although they were tempted to use an 'L-head' design to lower costs, they instead developed an overhead valve design that clearly showed the way to the future. This basic design was so successful that, with a few evolutionary improvements, this engine remained Chevrolet's standard bearer for almost three decades.
