The 1972 Buick Riviera marked the second year of the car's bold third-generation styling, often referred to as the “boat-tail” design, a nod to the rear-end styling that resembled a speedboat hull. Designed under the direction of GM stylist Bill Mitchell, the Riviera's sweeping lines, forward-thrusting nose, and sharply tapered tail set it apart from other full-size personal luxury cars of its time. Under the hood, the 455ci V8 delivered plenty of torque, making the Riviera a smooth and powerful cruiser. The combination of luxury, performance, and distinctive styling made the '72 Riviera an icon of American motoring in the early 1970s.
