1927 Ford Model T Coupe
For consignment, a 1927 Ford Model T coupe with a title verified 29,248 actual miles. On May 26, 1927, the last Model T was produced making room for the Model A. But it had a successful run with exactly 15,000,000 of them being produced and setting America on a trajectory that has yet to wane.
Exterior
Our consignor states it's all original and from the outside, we're not going to doubt it. The fantastic rounded hood gives way to the square and upright cab, finally sloping at the back, all in black in a simple but utterly classic profile. Long before bodies would widen to cover wheels, arching fenders would do the job, connected by running boards that would allow a step up into the cabin, a cabin rendered high thanks to the 21-inch wooden spoke wheels, a holdover from carriage days and used to traverse less than perfect roads, paved and otherwise. The outside presents in original condition with plenty of charming patina including dull paint, faded wood, chips, scratches, a torn visor, and rough areas of paint. But the bones are here and they are good ones.
Interior
Patina on the inside too begins with cloth door panels that have seen better days and a bench seat cloaked in a cloth cover. The wood rim of the steering wheel is in decent shape, held in place with oxidized spokes and leading to the driver quality dash with just two gauges. The rubber mat covering the floor is branded Ford and is in very nice condition while the headliner and cargo area behind the seats could use freshening. The trunk has wooden floors that also show some age, but the car is almost 100 years old, and condition is consistent with a driver. Like the outside, all parts are in place inside, just showing age.
Drivetrain
Here we have a 177ci L-head inline four cylinder, also looking original, and fueled by a 1-barrel carburetor. It puts out 20 horsepower which we have to remember, is better than one, plus you're fully enclosed in the coupe. A 2-speed planetary transmission sends power to the rear axle with 3.63 gears.
Undercarriage
Overall clean with some minimal surface rust and oil in the usual place, specifically on the pan and rear differential. Mechanical drum brakes on the rear only were the standard as were transverse leaf springs front and rear. The single exhaust runs through a stock style muffler right before dumping under the car, long before someone thought better to extend the pipe all the way to the back.
Drive-Ability
98 years old and still running, that's a testament to past stewards. Sure, a running horse might be faster, but not nearly as fun. Even so, the car moves well and provides a ride consistent with your typical car of the era. What few functions there are onboard all work as designed. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Model T's like this are highly sought after. So, if you've been looking for the ideal, solid example for restoration or to enjoy without worrying about scratching the paint, call today. And the race is on!
