Finished in stunning Sapphire White and Gold Gallant Saddle over a clean Black and White interior, this California-only model is an exceptionally rare piece of Mopar performance history, with actual production estimates believed to be closer to just 50 units despite only 100 being slated for production. Powering this Dodge is the legendary 315ci Super Red Ram Hemi V8 producing 260 horsepower and paired with a 2-speed PowerFlite automatic transmission. Very few Golden Custom Royals received the upscale custom trim package, and even fewer were equipped with the coveted D500 performance package, making this example highly collectible today. The D500 featured a unique valvetrain setup and was Dodge's very first factory high-performance car, while also utilizing Chrysler brakes, spindles, and suspension components for improved handling and durability. This example rides on new American Classic wide white wall tires wrapped around factory wheels and caps and was restored during the 1990s, though it was not put back on the road and running until 2018. Additional highlights include a repaint, rebuilt carburetors, valve adjustment, new valve cover gaskets, front “AAJ” disc brake conversion, a period-correct Offenhauser tri-power intake, matching Offenhauser spark plug covers, and a large collection of original brochures and D500 literature included with the sale. The 1956 Dodge D500 marked a major turning point for Dodge as the brand entered the emerging high-performance market during the height of the American horsepower wars. Introduced as Dodge's first true factory performance package, the D500 option transformed the standard Royal and Custom Royal models into legitimate performance machines by adding the powerful 315ci Hemi V8, upgraded valvetrain components, and heavy-duty suspension and braking equipment sourced from Chrysler. The D500 was developed to compete directly with other early performance offerings from Ford, Chevrolet, and Plymouth, and it quickly established Dodge as a serious contender in stock car racing and street performance. The ultra-rare California-only Golden Lancer trim package added unique styling appointments and upscale finishes, making surviving examples among the most desirable and collectible mid-1950s Dodge models today.
