1948 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible
The 1948 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible marked an important turning point in American automotive design. It was part of Cadillac's first truly new postwar lineup, replacing cars that had largely carried over prewar styling. Introduced after World War II, the Series 62 reflected the optimism, prosperity, and growing demand for luxury automobiles in the United States.
One of the car's most famous contributions was its restrained rear tailfins, inspired by aircraft styling associated with the Lockheed P-38 Lightning. Under General Motors' design leadership, including Harley Earl and Franklin Q. Hershey, Cadillac used these fins to give the rear of the car a modern, directional look. This small styling feature became one of Cadillac's signatures and helped launch the tailfin trend that defined much of American car design in the 1950s.
The Series 62 was positioned above the Series 61 and offered richer trim and appointments. For 1948, the Convertible Coupe was one of the most desirable body styles in the lineup. Approximately 5,450 Series 62 convertibles were produced, making it a relatively limited and collectible model today. The car carried a premium price when new, reflecting its luxury status, open-air body style, and Cadillac prestige.
