You know one of the latest marketing slogans: "The Most Interesting Man in the World". Well the Citroen SM may be one of the "Most Interesting Cars in the World". When Citroen purchased Maserati in 1968, the goal was to produce a Gran Turismo car that would be world-class. The SM debuted at the Geneva Auto Show in 1970 and delivered upon that promise. It also had many firsts, such as the high-pressure hydraulic systems that operated the DIRAVI power-steering. This was a very sophisticated system that has a very short lock to lock and self-centering steering operation.. The braking system was also unique as the brake pedal is actually a button that operates with elevated sensitivity. But one of the most unique features was the lever-operated leveling suspension system. You lower that car for high speeds and raise the car for a comfortable ride that is 2nd to none.
Our example comes to us from a well-known collector who also happens to be a Pebble Beach Concours judge for the past 30 years. On top of all of this, he owns a prominent restoration business. This SM has been serviced in Santa Clarita California at the late Jerry Hathaway's SM World. This is where the Euro Headlight conversion took place. The inner headlights actually move with the steering to help to see while cornering. One look under the hood and you can see the fantastic engineering of such a futuristic automobile. From a cosmetic side, the recent paint and interior refurbishment help make the car look like it just left the factory.
