1939 Pontiac Coupe

The Pontiac name and emblem both have Native American roots. The defunct GM division was named after Chief Pontiac, the courageous Indian leader who had led a rebellion against the British in the 1760's. The original logo of the Pontiac brand, which GM introduced in 1926, was an Indian headress.

A tastefully done hot rod with plenty of custom bodywork, a fresh interior, and a 383ci stroker Chevrolet crate engine with custom exhaust, staggered width tires and snazzy aluminum wheels. Bathe it in metal flake purple and you have a touch of Pontiac class that goes like the wind and slips neatly into the modern era of motoring.

Exterior
So as not to break up the wonderfully curved lines the chrome bumpers have been shaved, leaving just the naked body which in front has a spit cascade style grille which is fronted by a curving nose in a continuation of the hood with more custom horizontal and vertical grille work. Bullet bezeled headlights are flanking the hood and blend perfectly into the bulbous front fenders. The hood cowling is closed to show off the horizontal venting added into the side cowls. Long slightly curved doors shaved of their handles have consistent gaps and hold lightly smoked glass all around. A bulbed rear also shaved of its bumper has small bullet shaped taillights on the rounded rear fenders, and next to a rounded trunk lid. The running boards are body color, purple metal flake, and are straight and true. This hue bathes the remainder of the bulbous Art Deco designed body and gracing the lowers of each door and rear quarter panel are red, orange and blue likenesses of Chief Pontiac with sweptback head-dresses. A smoothed off rear roll pan finishes the tail end of the body and on all 4 corners are 15-inch Weld Rodlite wheels sporting staggered width blackwall rubber.

Interior
A swing of the door, (albeit with the remote), we are met with yards of leather and vinyl in a charcoal color. A panel on the door is in smooth charcoal vinyl with squared off embossments, and the lower is black carpet. The door pull/armrest is dark gray, and this vinyl panel is decorated with rocker switches for the power windows, power locks and shiny crank for the wing window. The front bucket seats present in dark charcoal leather with tuck and roll inserts, and smooth bolsters all of which are overstuffed and appear to have come from a late model Pontiac. In the back we can see a sprawling bench seat stretching from speakered side panel to speakered side panel. Upfront a custom metal flake purple metal dash with a polished insert houses several gauges, knobs, and A/C, as well as a CD player. Fronting the dash is a purple tilt column and a rally style steering wheel. Seats are power, the carpet is lush charcoal black, and the headliner is nice and tight looking stitched black vinyl.

Drivetrain
A consignor stated 383ci Chevrolet engine is fired with electronic ignition. Fresh purple ignition wires help light the fire and an Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor feeds the proper amount of air and fossils. A Turbo Hydramatic 350 3-speed automatic transmission is behind the healthy mill and sends power to the ground via a 10-bolt rear axle. Plenty of polished aluminum to go around for all the bolt ons stuck to this engine.

Undercarriage
All clean and rust-free underneath with a solid frame, good body hangers, and a like new exhaust featuring Flowmaster mufflers. Some neatly finished wiring and a grease free environment are also seen. Power disc brakes have been added to the front, and power drums are on the rear. Giving the quality ride is an independent coil spring front suspension and leaf springs are reserved for the rear.

Drive-Ability
Hopping into this car I felt like an art patron viewing a masterpiece only I was actually interacting with it. The seats are plush, and all is perfectly ergonomically placed. This car lit right up, and I was off for the test track. It cruised smoothly, accelerated on my demand, and shifted effortlessly. The low stance led to great handling despite being in a large coupe. With all that leather and padding I could barely hear the engine running.

Just a wonderful, nicely performed, tasteful executed street rod. Pontiac provided the basics with the pontoon fenders and torpedo rear, but all that power, shaving and custom paint make it a work of rolling art, on blingy wheels/tires nonetheless!
