Largely introduced to the world after World War II, the Volkswagen Beetle has been one of the longest running, mass-production vehicles the world has ever seen. Continually improved upon year after year, millions of buyers would find reasons to own what become affectionately known as the “Bug” at some point in their lifetime. With competition starting to come from many different compact car companies, Volkswagen came out with the Super Beetle in 1971 and produced this slightly larger and wider model until 1979. Along with being more spacious, one of the new features that made this Super Beetle stand out from the standard was the front suspension now utilizing a MacPherson strut assembly which greatly improved turning radius and overall driving quality.
The Super Beetle showcased a larger interior, more room in the trunk, vented louvers under the front bumper allowing airflow into the cabin, a curved windshield and flatter roofline. The 1973 Super Beetle model saw the oil-bath air cleaner give way to a dry filter element, the generator was replaced with an alternator, and the instrument panel formally shared with the standard Beetle was all-new and featured a raised speedometer pod. Super Beetles produced for sale in America came exclusively with the larger 1600cc engine.
We are very pleased to offer this 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle Woody Wagon finished in Ivory White exterior with real wood trims and a Black vinyl roof with a Brown vinyl interior. It was transformed into a woody wagon years ago using detailed, full-scale plans provided by VW Woody as a crafty home construction project often seen cruising in coastal cities. Advertised in VW publications and Popular Mechanics magazine, the finished conversion kit showcases wood trim paneling reminiscent of older Ford station wagons with dark panels and light framing, tinted rear plexiglass windows, rear mounted spare tire. Still powered by its original 1600cc Flat 4-cylinder engine producing 60 horsepower and mated to a 4-speed manual transaxle. While being a custom vehicle from the outside, it has kept all its standard equipment and added options including defrost, heat, AM/FM radio, chrome bumpers with rubber bumper moldings, twin door map pockets, dual rear ashtrays, passenger vanity mirror, full interior carpeting, and 165R15 Coker Classic white wall radial tires.
This customized VW Beetle is a unique conversion and sure to turn heads cruising around as there aren't many left over from the surfers who made them famous. The roof is real wood covered with a vinyl top, the wood all around presents a nice patina surviving in rather good condition but beginning to show its age along with the paint. It just recently had a tune up which replaced the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap & rotor, and ignition condenser. This Beetle Woody Wagon is ready to cruise for many more years and show off its rare & attractive presentation you just don't see very often! Thank you for your interest and please reach out directly to have a look at this converted Beetle!
