1968 Porsche

911 L

Description

This 1968 Porsche 911L was built on November 13, 1967, and was purchased as a non-running project by the seller in 2014. An ensuing build was completed in April 2022 and included the installation of 911R-style bumpers and taillights, a fiberglass hood with a center-fill fuel cap, Lexan door windows, front brakes and suspension sourced from a 1985 911 Carrera, rear Koni shocks, a custom fuel cell, Weber 46 carburetors with polished intake trumpets, an MSD ignition system, a body-color roll cage, and a 917-style shift knob. The car is finished in tangerine with blue side stripes over black leather upholstery with plaid inserts, and power comes from a replacement 2.8-liter flat-six paired with a Type 911/01 five-speed manual transaxle. This modified 911L is now offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, refurbishment records, and a clean California title in the seller's name.

Delivered from the factory in Tangerine (6809), the car was repainted in its factory color by SOS Customz of Oceanside, California, in April 2022. 911R-style lighting and fiberglass bumpers, fenders, and quarter panels were molded into the bodywork. A fiberglass hood with a center-fill fuel cap was also added during the project along with blue side graphics, a Talbot-style mirror, Lexan door windows with leather pull straps, louvered quarter glass, and a louvered steel decklid. The windshield wipers have been removed.

The 16″ Fuchs-style wheels are finished in satin black and are mounted with 205/45 front and 225/50 rear Toyo Proxes R1R tires. The front suspension, sway bar, and shocks were sourced from a 1985 911 Carrera, while the rear setup features Koni shocks. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel discs with vented rotors out back.

The cockpit features OMP bucket seats that are trimmed in black leather with plaid seat inserts. Matching custom door panels are fitted along with a custom dash cover, an RS-style carpet kit, a body-color roll cage, Rennline kick panels, floor mats, and a 917-style shift knob. “Outlaw” script has been added to the passenger side of the dash. The trunk houses the center-fill gas tank and a quilted cover.

The leather-wrapped Sparco steering wheel frames a central 8k-rpm tachometer along with a 150-mph speedometer, a clock, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows under 1,200 miles, approximately 200 of which have been added since the completion of the build. Total mileage is unknown.

The replacement flat-six was enlarged to 2.8-liters by Bruckmann Racing of El Cajon, California, in 2016 and features a 2.0-liter engine case that dates to 1968 as well as a 2.0-liter crankshaft, JE 94mm pistons and cylinders, rebuilt and ported 2.7-liter cylinder heads, JTG Daugherty Racing camshafts, an MSD ignition system, Weber 46 carburetors with polished intake trumpets, and an oil cooler sourced from a 1981 911SC. The engine was serviced by Makellos Classics of Escondido, California, in October 2021.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a replacement Type 911/01 five-speed manual transaxle with a dog-leg first gear and a 215mm clutch surface. The exhaust system features 1.5″ headers and an RSR-style twin-exit Dansk muffler. A custom fuel cell is fitted. The underside and wheel wells were undercoated by SOS Customz during the project.

The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows a production completion date of November 13, 1967, and lists the factory colors, equipment, and powertrain numbers.
