Description

1931 Pontiac Sedan Six Series 401

The stock market crash in late 1929 and resulting economic depression hit the automobile industry particularly hard; for the majority of Americans at that time a car was a luxury, not a necessity. General Motors fared much better than most automobile manufacturers; Pontiac sales were up over the numbers posted for 1930, as were dealer profits. The 1931 series 401 Fine Six wasn't a carry over model either, but a new body on a longer 112" wheelbase chassis. The roadster and 4 door phaeton models were discontinued but a 2 door, 4 passenger cabriolet with roll-up windows was added to the model line. The remainder of the line consisted of a 2 door, 2 passenger coupe; a 2 door, 4 passenger rumble seat coupe; a 2 door 5 passenger sedan and a pair of 4 door 5 passenger sedans; a standard and a Custom.

For consignment, a rare all steel sedan from 1931 now morphed into street rod sedan form. Plenty of customizations, lots of performance add ons, and an overall very nice presentation, for this 1931 Pontiac 401 street rod.

Exterior
All steel, absolutely no fiberglass on this rodder, that sports a black vinyl covered roof, an open cowled hood, (panels are available), and fresh chrome for the headlights and parking lights all bathed in an icy purple hue. Body panels are nice and straight, totally rust free, and fenders are nice and curvaceous with a connecting running board. A woven mesh chromed grille flanked by a single LED headlight on each side, connected by a curved chrome arm and a simple bumper announces you have arrived. Trumpeting more highlights, silver covers the bumped out beltline for just a little extra bling and matches the steamer style trunk on the back. Tinted windows are all around with the rear side glass having custom etching done on both sides and rear is just perfect quintessential Pontiac from 1931. 15-inch Torque thrust wheels with spinner centers are all around and are expertly polished and wrapped in nearly new blackwall rubber.

Interior
Not unlike the Easter egg exterior, the interior bowls you over with door panels that are wrapped in gray with the essential map pocket, billet style armrest and shiny door actuator. Front power windows have also been added to this rodder. Queue the seats captain! Where we see black leather for the overstuffed and heavily bolstered dual front buckets and a back bench. A high gloss black metal dash highlighted by a beautifully grained oak fronts all this excitement, where we see embedded chrome bezeled VDO gauges, a GM tilt column, and in the snazzy oak overhead console is an AM/FM/CD sound system which floats in a sea of gray broadcloth for the headliner. Gray carpet is on the floors and is in excellent condition. Last but not least is the long posted piston knobbed shifter sitting proudly in the center.

Drivetrain
A painfully vibrant 350ci Chevy black block with fresh chromed valve covers, a ribbed and polished air cleaner, and ceramic coated headers snaking out from below all reside in the open for viewing engine bay, and I'll need to pause to put on my sunglasses to finish this section off... Ok I'm back, and to continue we have a polished intake and an Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor. Also mounted and looking sharp are a chrome alternator, fuel pump, radiator overflow and billet spark plug wire separators. On the back is a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission with a GM 10-bolt rear axle.

Undercarriage
With plenty of liberties taken to the nth degree on the build, we note an independent coil sprung front suspension, and a leaf sprung rear. Disc brakes for the front and drum brakes for the back. Noted also are dual Glasspack style exhaust snaking their way rearward from the headers, past the fuel tank and ending with turned down chrome tips.

Drive-Ability
Prior to entering this car I gave it the once over with my trained eye and folks, there is barely a mark on it anywhere. I climbed in and breathed in all the black and gray, then finally lit the candles and we were off. A great acceleration overwhelmed me and was music to my ears on the exhaust. Even without power steering this car was a breeze to drive, and a great cruiser.

A wonderful example of an Easter egg in a sea of mundane rods, this rodder is very well done with many high-end accoutrements, gorgeous color, and lots of engine chrome on full display without the cowls. A great runner, and a definite turnkey Hot Rod ready to enjoy immediately. So come down to Classic Auto Mall and peel his beauty for yourself.
